Sponsor | blakelylaw | Oct 13, 2006 7:38am | Came across a comments by Clementine Churchill, wife of Winston, which I thought would be a good jumping off point for a new discussion. Granted, the comment was given as part of a speech during an election campaign in the1930s-50s, but it still rings true today. Especially as more & more people are re-examining the value of having political parties.
She believed that the proper function of any elected representative of the people should be "to do what in his faithful & disinterested judgment he believes right & necessary for the honor & safety of our beloved country." Second would be his duty & loyalty to his constituents & only third would be his duty & loyalty to his party. "There is no doubt of the order in which they stand in any healthy manifestation of democracy."
